THE REFINERY Project: Porsche GT4 Clubsport MR

THE REFINERY Project: Porsche GT4 Clubsport MR

March 16, 2020

We wanted to share a really exciting project here at The Refinery. This project is so special because the car is unlike any sports car or exotic that you might see on the streets. This is a factory-built Porsche race car - the Porsche GT4 Clubsport MR.

Porsche GT4 Clubsport MR

First - a bit more info about this car: The Porsche GT4 Clubsport is a Porsche Motorsports built race car. It has been lightened for racing by replacing many of the metal panels with composite panels, and the glass has also been replaced with lightweight polycarbonate.

Then the familiar interior coverings have all been removed to save more weight, and the seats have been replaced by a Recaro carbon-fiber racing seat. The interior now carries a full racing cage, and other telemetry sensor-ports and safety systems including a fire-suppression system.

The steering wheel is the same one used in the Porsche RSR race car, and the gauge cluster has been replaced with a full digital setup with indicators for all key systems.

But this car is not an "ordinary" GT4 Clubsport. It has been further enhanced by Porsche's racing partner, Manthey Racing (MR). Manthey continues the crusade for lightness by replacing most of the exterior panels with ultra-lightweight carbon fiber. The wheels are also MR spec, made by BBS.

The headlights have been replaced with less costly racing-spec units (in case of race damage), and the fueling is now via dual-port carbon-fiber fuel cell, accessed in the centre of the hood.

This car also has integrated air-jacks for the ultimate in speed and convenience when swapping wheels or inspecting the underside at the track.

Our job at THE REFINERY was to complete the following:

  1. Perform paint correction on all painted panels
  2. Install custom race graphics/livery
  3. Install paint protection film (PPF) on all body panels
  4. Apply ceramic coating on the new PPF

Here are some shots of how this project unfolded:

The car arrives in Canada with its share of dust, surface marring and handling marks.

Our first task was to fix the marring on the white painted panels:

Now that the paint is corrected, it's time to bring the custom graphics to life. Several digital renderings were provided to show the final livery designs:

Now we create and install those graphics...

Graphics are nearly completed...

Once the vinyl graphics are one, it's time to protect the car with XPEL paint protection film:

Look how the PPF changes the look of the raw carbon fiber:

Almost done. On to final details:

Ceramic Pro coating is on, and it's ready to go back to Policaro Motorsports for final tuning!
